'Satyagraha' Box Office Collection: Amitabh-Ajay Starrer Rocks on Opening Day Earns ₹11 Crore


Amitabh Bacchan-Ajay Devgn's latest political drama flick, "Satyagraha" has embarked on a good start at the domestic box office.

"Satyagraha" took a fantastic opening and picked up well in the evening and night shows on the first day of its release. The film raked in ₹11.12 crore at the Indian box office, which is deemed as the biggest ever opening for a Prakash Jha film.
"#Satyagraha grew steadfastly and robustly in evening/night shows. Collects Rs 11.21 cr on Friday. Prakash Jha's biggest opener thus far," film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.

"Satyagraha" received positive response from critics, who appreciated the sincere performances of the main characters in the film. Apart from Amitabh and Ajay Devgn, the political drama flick boasts of a big star cast including Arjun Rampal, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Manoj Bajpai and Amrita Rao.

The film, which was released in 2,700 plus screens, registered around 50 percent occupancy in multiplexes, whereas single screens witnessed 70 percent to 80 percent occupancy. The buzz about the film within the industry is strong and its collections are expected to grow over the weekend.

"Satyagraha" has opened well in overseas markets as well. According to Taran, the Amitabh-starrer earned AED 430,000 on the first day in UAE-GCC markets. "#Satyagraha opens to a strong word of mouth in UAE-GCC. Thu AED 430,000. Few screens yet to report. Bigger start than #Raajneeti," Taran tweeted.

The first weekend collections will be crucial and its business is dependent on youth and family audiences. Strong word of mouth might help the film to garner better collections in the first weekend.

"Satyagraha" had a solo release on 30 August, which could work in the film's favour. As there are no big competitors, "Satyagraha" is expected to score big both at domestic and overseas box offices.

High on superheroes, special effects and thrilling action Krrish 3 stars Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Kangna Ranaut, Vivek Oberoi and is directed once again by Rakesh Roshan. What is so cool, is along with all that, audiences are in for a triple treat with Krrish 3 because Hrithik Roshan will be seen playing a triple role in the film, that of Rohit (Krrish’s father), Krishna (alter ego of Krrish) and Krrish (the superhero). Commenting on the film, Hrithik Roshan says: “Krrish 3 involves me in three various roles definitely making it a challenging film.”

Priyanka Chopra will be seen in two unique avatars. Priyanka Chopra commented saying: “Krrish 3 has an audience for everyone, whether children, grandparents or families. Krrish 3 is now bigger and better.”

The next installment of Rakesh Roshan’s science fiction series, Krrish 3’s first trailer begins with the possibility of a milestone discovery by Krrish’s father Rohit (Hrithik Roshan) followed by the introduction of a malevolent genius ‘Kaal’ (Vivek Oberoi). ’Kaal’ is aided by a vamp (Kangana Ranaut) whose persona reminds one of a mixture of Catwoman and Black Widow.

Rakesh Roshan was excited to launch the trailer of the film and commented saying: “The first look decides the fate of the film. Many special effects have been used in the film. Given our budget, I feel we have done our best.”

“Western civilization has always had a very strong comic book culture. And it has been around so long that it has almost attained the status of mythology. It is no surprise then that every summer Hollywood sees a spate of superhero movies. In India, there isn’t source material like that to fall back on. So a superhero had to be created.

When Koi Mil Gaya released in 2003, and the novel concept of Jadoo and his powers was so widely accepted, I knew that the stage was set for the birth of a very special hero. Krrish was created as a result. No stone was left unturned in making sure that we gave our audiences a fantastic and state-of-the-art superhero. It worked. And Krrish became a household name.

Now we had our own little mythology. Jadoo, Rohit, Krishna, Krrish. Set in a world of science fiction but very easy to relate to and connect with. In the last film, we created the character. Now it only made sense to move ahead with him. The challenge was to make it even bigger and better, yet with the strong emotional core which defines the cinema that I create. I took it on, and here we are, ready with Krrish 3.

It seems Rohit Shetty is going to hit the jackpot again with his latest venture 'Chennai Express'. The Shah Rukh-Deepika starer has opens to packed houses on Friday, August 9. Prior to it, the film broke all previous paid previews records on Thursday.

The film has collected Rs 6.75 crore, which is the biggest paid preview collection by any Bollywood film till date.

In UK too, the film received an unprecedented response. Even though the film had only night show previews on Thursday, it collected £142,220, beating the record of Bollywood films 'My Name Is Khan', 'Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna', '3 Idiots' and 'Ek Tha Tiger'.
